( Flemish, Circle of 1602 - 1674 )
Vanitas still life with skull seen from two angles
Materials:
oil on canvas
Size Notes:
canvas: 14½ by 16½ in.; 36.8 by 41.9 cm.
Description:
SIGN UP or LOG IN
Condition:
framed: 23 by 25¼ in.; 58.4 by 61.6 cm. The canvas is lined and is taut and stable on its stretcher. The image reads very well beneath the varnish with subtle shading retained. Fine cracquelure is visible throughout but is stable and not distracting, and the canvas edge is slightly visible at right where it has been abraded but it is not distracting. Under UV inspection, an area of repair at lower left is visible, along with minor retouching along the right edge and a few small dots of retouching scattered throughout. The skulls appear to be almost entirely free of retouching. The painting can certainly hang in its current state. Offered in a simply carved ebonized wood frame.
